Horror Shows Up for the Golden Globes

Horror Shows Up for the Golden Globes

Horror has long been the genre that gets snubbed for recognition during award season. If it is not a period piece, a biopic, or an abstract critically acclaimed masterpiece, it lacks the qualifications required to be nominated. There have been some horror movies that have been snubbed over the years but this year, horror is turning heads.

I do want to make note, that while it is great to see these films being recognized, there is still a lack of recognition among films that are directed by or feature people of color, with Get Out (2017) being the only one to be nominated and win an Academy Award for Best Director, Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Best Screenplay, and Best Picture in recent years. While I am sure it was deemed "worthy" for its themes of racism and social commentary and not so much for its horror elements, it was deserving off all of its wins. We have a long way to go in that regard and we should continue to be loud about it.

This year, four horror films and a series were nominated across various categories at the Golden Globes.

Are these nominations pointing to a future where horror is more acceptable as a genre when it comes to awards season? One could hope. As someone who has seen horror tell deserving stories, it is good to see horror getting recognition in spaces where its long been shunned and not taken seriously as "cinema".
