Midsummer Scream may be known for it's amazing vendors, attractions and haunts but it also showcases the work of horror filmmakers on the rise with their short film blocks. This year, there were 15 short film blocks that included everything from ghost stories to slashers.
The film block titled, Splatter Town, featured a trio of short films that explored the depth of bodily fluids. And let's just say, it's was a very gross lineup of films. One of those films was The Spider, written and directed by Andy Chen.
Andy Chen's The Spider, is a horror take on Spiderman and stars Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead) as Peter. The film is fan-made but this short doesn't feel like it at all. From the performances to the practical effects, the display of talent is impressive.
In the film, Peter is bitten by a spider but instead of just getting cool superpowers, he turns into a murderous spider. In an interview with Bloody Flicks, Chen stated: "The idea for The Spider came from the idea of mixing Spiderman and The Fly" and it's very clear from Peter's transformation.
The Spider is gory, nasty, gross, bloody, everything a gore enthusiast loves about the subgenre. You can watch Andy Chen's take on Spiderman on YouTube.
