Indie horror is such an important component of the horror genre. It keeps horror evolving and it gives space to voices we wouldn't normally see horror movies from.
Indie horror breeds new ideas that propel the horror genre forward. While most people attribute independent horror films with low budget, cheesy, B-movies, films like Ti West's X or A24's Talk to Me, are changing that narrative.
While these films may not be as well crafted as films that are backed by mega studios, they are able to flex their creative arms and bring us more original horror.
We recently sat down with the director of Older Gods (2023) and he gave us a better insight into what it takes to bring original horror ideas to life and just how simple it is to get started.
Looking at films such a Terrifier that were made on small budgets and aren't restricted by studios and red tape, are able to use that freedom to go against the mainstream. And the numbers don't lie. Terrifer made over $400,000 and was made for $35,000. Terrifier 2 was made for $250,000 and brought in over $15 million. Indie horror is truly changing the horror game.
