Widow's Bay (2026): Season 1 Review

When a mysterious death happens, longtime residents begin to question whether the town's dark past is once again catching up with them. As more strange events unfold, Sheriff Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) and a handful of locals find themselves searching for answers while trying to protect a town that seems determined to keep its secrets buried.

Let's be honest: horror TV has been struggling lately. We've had barely a handful of horror shows that have done well the past couple of years. So I can be honest and say I didn't expect much from Apple TV's latest horror comedy series, Widow's Bay. My caution flew out the window after the first episode. It's no wonder it has received 19 Emmy nominations.

What makes Widow's Bay work isn't just the mystery surrounding the curse but the people living with it. The series exhibits an impressive balance between horror and comedy, never allowing one genre to overshadow the other. One moment you're laughing at the dry humor, and the next you're watching something genuinely creepy. Some episodes stand out more than others, but they all come together to serve up a fulfilling finale that only deepens the lore of the island and its residents. 

The performances are another highlight. Matthew Rhys brings both warmth and exhaustion to Sheriff Loftis, making him an easy character to root for. Kate O'Flynn as Patricia, who is the quirky assistant, livens up the cast and her comedic timing is always on point. The ensemble cast has great chemistry, and even the smaller supporting characters feel like they belong in this strange little town rather than just existing to move the plot along.

Widow's Bay is exactly the kind of horror series the genre has been missing. It's funny without becoming silly, creepy without relying on cheap scares, and filled with characters you'll actually want to spend time with. I am looking forward to season 2, which has already been greenlit for late 2027 or early 2028.
